NEW WIDE MRI AT RIVER RADIOLOGY
High quality imaging and comfort for patients weighing up to 500 lbs

Kingston, New York, July 18, 2011 — We’ve all gotten used to seeing images of our internal organs without experiencing any invasive knife cutting surgery. First X-rays, then CT scans and MRIs. But getting these scans has not always been the most pleasant experience – until now. River Radiology in Kingston NY announced it is adding a new wide MRI system that, according to Susan Connors MD, Medical Director of River Radiology, improves the patient experience and still provides exceptional quality scans.

“Some patients can present special challenges when undergoing MR testing,” added Dr. Connors. “Now we can accommodate patients who weigh up to 500 pounds, and even those who don’t like small spaces can be more easily imaged and diagnosed with high quality scans.” Large patients won’t have to travel out of area for MRIs.

The new wide bore MRI, expected to be fully operational by this October, has a powerful magnetic field strength that is the one most preferred by physicians. It also makes scanning sessions faster. “This wide MRI enables us to scan more anatomy in less time compared to previous generation systems. This results in an improved scanning experience,” said Radiologist Dr. Steven Schwartz.

Wide bore refers to the shape of the opening that the patient lies in. The new wide bore MRI is not only wider but also shorter in length. Traditionally, wide bore scanners had limitations and poorer quality images. This new wide bore MRI system improves image quality and still allows more room around the patient and more comfort during the examination.

Originally developed in the late 1970s, MRI scans combine the power of magnetic and radio frequency fields, allowing physicians to view the tissue structure of the internal anatomy without exploratory surgery. MRI can be used to image almost any part of the body: MRI is the most accurate tool for evaluating most diseases of the brain and spinal cord; the most accurate way to image joints, such as knees, shoulders and wrists; plus it is an excellent tool to provide breast imaging on patients who have had suspicious mammograms or a history of breast disease. Many MRI images of different parts of the body can be seen on the website: www.RiverRadiology.com/mri.html

While the new wide MRI is being installed and tested, River Radiology technologists and radiologists will perform all MRI scans at their Benedictine campus office during August and September. For updated information contact River Radiology at 845-340-4500.
