ONE RADIOLOGY FACILITY IS STEPPING LIGHTLY FOR YOUR WELL BEING

Kingston, NY—December 2009. River Radiology is not only “stepping lightly” when it comes to dosage of radiation for procedures with children, but also with adults. “Our objective is to use the lowest dose possible, while providing the highest quality image,” said Angie Rockwell, lead CT technologist. “According to research on the advanced CT scanners we use, doses that are lower than those previously recommended are still high in quality.”

River Radiology has been lowering doses since 2001 when it purchased the latest multi-slice CT scanner. “We are ahead of the new guidelines, which for pediatrics is called the Step Lightly or Image Gently Program,” said Rockwell. “And now we are reducing dose levels even further.”

Rockwell and another River Radiology Technologist, Bob Senerchia, went to a CT Dose Reduction Seminar in New York the end of September 2009, where they learned they could lower the CT dosage by up to 20 percent.

The American College of Radiology (ACR) recently re-accredited River Radiology in use of their CT scanners. Part of the accreditation involved a physicist coming on site to measure doses used, and analyses of clinical images submitted for critique.

River Radiology has 5 technologists dedicated to CT Scanning. “Our objective is to ultimately provide physicians with the best radiological images for the best diagnosis,” said Rockwell. “That means we need to provide the best images. For the benefit of our patients we also want to expose them to the lowest dosage possible.”
